Book Five: Sibylline

Mortally wounded avenging his sister’s death, Nico rides to the aged and gnarled goat herder's hut on the heights of Mount Sibylline. 

Elsewhere in time, Nick awakens. Twin lives and centuries converging, he's compelled to return to San Michele.

Healed by the old seer’s potent forest medicine, Nico returns to San Michele, and learns that Sudbury is demanding Filippo hand over Nico's brother Giorgio and brother-in-law Giovanni for execution. Although certain Nico murdered Sudbury's soldiers, Filippo names him sheriff to placate and train the peasants to defend the town.

Nick’s partisan rescuers Chiara and Pietro assure him his disorientation is temporary and bring him back to present realities.

Nico designs a momentum-driven war machine able to launch a barrage of arrows. Sudbury receives evidence that the Jewels of Saladin are real, promising his army legendary treasure.

Chiara denies Nick’s assertions of past intimacy and, to prove it, takes the resistance fighter Miro to bed.

Filippo commands Nico’s sister Annunziata to his palace and swears love to her. Aunt Maria confesses her history with the aging baron, and that Filippo could be her son.

Nico shows Leo gunpowder, claiming the alchemy came in a dream. They convince Filippo a hunting party will resupply dwindling meat and lead seventeen peasants to the mountains, vowing them to loyalty and liberty. Nico nicknames them his ‘Mad Dogs’. They manufacture a cache of gunpowder, but within hours of their return to the San Michele Filippo knows of the powder. Nico has been betrayed.

Sudbury‘s massive army swells, forcing Filippo and Nico into an alliance of survival. Filippo counts on the powder. Nico counts on his strange visions and fate foretold.   .

One night, in the midst of war preparations, Antiocha suddenly reappears. She faked her death, sewed a hog into her burial shroud and fled. She’s returned to save San Michele from Sudbury and Filippo. Nico is precipitously in love with her. 

She rides to the old seer’s mountain hut until her ‘resurrection’ can be timed to destroy Filippo and Sudbury.

Snowed in, Nick recuperates, and builds his strength for the trek to San Michele.

As Sudbury’s Gold Rose Army moves out, Filippo orders Nico to lead a detachment of peasants and soldiers eastward to raid neighboring farms and stores. They veer west instead, to ambush Sudbury in the mountains.

Chiara’s lover is arrested by the Gestapo. She and Nick make a break  for the hut of an old forest forager, Imilia. “Find your fate,” she tells them, challenging Chiara to share an herbal brew with Nick.
